About Me
"America's future will be determined by the home and the school. The child becomes largely what he is taught; hence we must watch what we teach, and how we live." ― Jane Addams
My Guiding Philosophies:
1. Providing all young people equal opportunity to receive a quality public education is a moral imperative for our society.
2. Social studies education should engage students in critical thinking about history, government, and economics.
3. High school students need to be pushed to develop strong decision making and communication skills for the future.
4. The classroom should be a safe space where both students and teacher are respected and supported.
5. Teenagers need to balance their academic, extracurricular, and personal activities to thrive as young adults.
I am a North Carolina native, born and raised in Wilmington, and have lived in Durham and taught at LRHS for the past 14 years. I majored in Sociology and Journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill and earned my master’s degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem in 2004. I joined the Leesville Social Studies department that year and became National Board Certified in 2009. My husband teaches middle school math in Cary, bless him. We both come from teaching families – my mother was an elementary teacher and his father was a high school principal. We have an eight-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter at LES. In addition to teaching Social Studies, I am also the lead advisor of the LRHS Model UN Team and a Red4EdNC Board member. My hobbies include graphic design, photography, singing, and making playlists.
